Appeal for old photos and keepsakes ahead of Green Lane Primary’s 60th anniversary

EVENT PLANS: Green Lane Primary School headteacher Rob Goffee and the group that are planning the 60th anniversary celebration

A DALE primary school is hoping former pupils and staff members will bring in mementos and old photographs ahead of a grand exhibition and event to mark its 60th anniversary.

Green Lane Primary School has undergone several major changes since it was opened on April 30, 1959, as a secondary modern school.

Now a planning committee wants to celebrate its sixth decade by hosting an event on May 4. Already several people have brought in old photographs of their time at the school and headteacher Rob Goffee has uncovered an original programme for the 1959 opening ceremony which began with the singing of the hymn Jerusalem.

He said: “We found some old textbooks and we thought we could put them in a bit of a display. We have also found some old trophies.”

Among the ideas being explored for the celebration is to re-stage the Toothbrush Crazy song that former teacher Mrs Armstrong wrote in the 1980s and was aired on television.

The school is hoping that former staff members will get in touch to be part of the event and an appeal is being made for anyone to share their old photographs, stories and mementos with the school. Contact the school on 01833 690298.
