Mission accomplished as Gainford school play park revamp is completed

PLAY MAKEOVER: Adam White

PRIMARY pupils have something to celebrate after their school received new play equipment.

The area at Gainford Primary School was officially opened to a tremendous cheer from the pupils.

When Chris Riley was appointed as acting headteacher in September 2017 the old playtime equipment had just been condemned and she made it her mission to improve the playground for pupils within two years.

The pupils in school came up with designs for the equipment and the school council was responsible for drawing together the ideas into a workable plan.

Thanks to the help of Maggie Wilson and Adam White at Teesdale Action Partnership, funding applications were made.

County councillors James Rowlandson and George Richardson donated £5,000 each from their neighbourhood budgets.

Children in school showed their entrepreneurial skills by making and selling items such as jewellery and cakes and the cash all added to the total. With contributions from the school fund, the target of £16,000 was met.

Mrs Riley said: “The installation of the new equipment has had a very beneficial impact on how children play at break times – they are more physically active and having great fun at the same time.

“The equipment is also wheelchair accessible so that everyone in school can access it. Our local Scout group will also have access to our new equipment.

“This is only phase one of our project and the children already have lots of ideas for phase two.

“We very much appreciate all of the help and support we have had with this project.”
