Butterknowle pupils support education for African youngsters

HELP FOR AFRICA: Expedition leader Kirsty Brien with children from Butterknowle Primary School during their fundraising drive

CHILDREN at Butterknowle Primary School are helping impoverished youngsters in Africa get a better education after learning about their plight.

Expedition leader Kirsty Brien, from Teesdale, visited Tanzania last year with charity Seeway Trust where she helped build classrooms, install solar lighting and erect other structures for impoverished communities. While there she shared her experiences with pupils from Butterknowle Primary School.

Headteacher Tessa Fenoughty said: “She Facetimed us from Tanzania and we actually saw where she was and what she was doing. The children were amazed.”

Ms Brien added: “It was quite an eye-opener. One of the families literally has nothing. The children saw they have none of the things that they take for granted.”

A ground-breaking move by Seeway has seen a centre prepared for Tanzania children who have special needs, she added in Children at Butterknowle were so moved by what they saw that they decided to raise cash during their annual Christmas lunch last year. The event was so successful that they were able to exceed their £150 target – the amount it costs pay for schooling for a year for one Tanzanian child.
