A GROUP of “suffragettes” and “suffragists” descended on Barnard Castle’s streets to promote voter registration at the weekend.
Women from Teesdale’s Labour party donned Edwardian costume and marched around the town to mark 100 years since women were given the right to vote.
The move was part of efforts by the group to get dale folk to register to cast their ballots.
Emma Rowell, from Teesdale’s Labour group, added: “In Barnard Castle there are approximately 500 unregistered households.
“The group hopes that with events and the ongoing engagement with voters on the doorstep they can help to make voter registration easy and accessible to all households – so the women of Barnard Castle and Teesdale can enjoy the right to vote.
“It was so hard won by their grandmothers and great grandmothers.”
