BUILDING on the success of the previous three events, the popular Classic and Retro Car Show returns to Barnard Castle two months earlier than in previous years.
This year the event, started three years ago by friends Alan Beaty, Jonathan Wallis, Colin Graham and Jonathan Privett who all share a love of all things automotive, will take place on Sunday, June 23, in the grounds of Barnard Castle School, rather than the middle of August.
The change in date, organiser Mr Beaty, a master at the school, says is to coincide with the school’s annual weekend of activities for Old Barnardians.
Mr Beaty added: “We normally have some kind of sporting activity for OB weekend, but I thought it was a great opportunity for OBs to come along and enjoy the show and maybe bring their own vehicles along as well.”
The event, which is free to attend for spectators, has become a firm favourite with both locals and visitors alike who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
The show, open to all pre-millennium vehicles from cars to tractors, will feature a static display and a ride out rally around the dale mid-morning.
He added: “We have worked out that we have 170 spaces for vehicles and we are at the point where we could move to the back green, but at the moment we are staying at the front for the static display as it is lovely and picturesque.
“The idea is to keep the show simple in case the weather is not kind to us. It has been so far and the format has served us well so far. What other car show can spectators go to for free and then wander into Barnard Castle?”
To enter a vehicle in the static display costs £5 and participants, Mr Beaty adds, are happy to pay knowing the money is going to good causes.
He said: “We do get one or two people comment on social media that at other events if you put a vehicle on display there is no fee. But those events are organised by commercial operators and we are all volunteer vehicle enthusiasts wanting to raise some money for charity.”
This year proceeds from the show will be split between Teesdale Cancer Research, Barnard Castle Christmas Lights and other local charities.
Catering will be on site throughout the day, serving breakfast and afternoon tea and Barnard Castle Band will be entertaining again.
