MORE than £1,800 was raised during a golf day organised by a farm charity at Headlam Hall Hotel.
Nine teams of four took to the greens as part of a charity fundraiser organised by the County Durham branch of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), raising £1,886.
Competitors enjoyed a bacon sandwich on arrival then played nine holes of golf and battled it out on the putting green before enjoying lunch and a presentation ceremony.
Local RABI chairman David Maughan said: “It is an annual event and we’ve held about eight before, but it’s the first time we’ve been able to hold it since 2019 because of Covid.”
The winning team – Bob Armstrong, Bill Slack, Ralph Hull and David Shepherd – were presented with the inaugural Alan Gibbon Memorial Trophy, which was donated and presented by his widow Margaret.
Mr Gibbon, from Barnard Castle, had been a regular supporter of RABI and keen golfer before his death last year, said Mr Maughan.
The prize for the golfer with the longest drive was awarded to Greg Elgy and Josh Borrows beat off stiff competition on the putting green.
The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution assists about 2,000 farming families every day in a number of ways.
The County Durham branch hosts various regular fundraising events throughout the year.
Mr Maughan added: “We’re a hard-working group and we’re really pleased to have raised this amount.
“It’s thanks to all the people who support the event and we hope that it will continue for years to come.”
