PUPILS at Green Lane Primary School, in Barnard Castle, have helped plant 70 trees to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.
The trees, donated by Rotary Barnard Castle satellite E-group, will form part of the Queen’s green canopy.
Each year group helped Rotarians Godfrey and Linda Irving plant ten trees – a mix of oak, ash, yew, maple and beech – many of which have been grown from acorns and seeds by E-group members, within the school grounds.
Mr Irving said: “The children have taken part in a magical experience in planting the trees, which helps the environment and celebrates the Queen’s green canopy.”
A special royal oak, purchased and donated by the Rotary group, was planted at the front of the school in a special ceremony on Friday.
As part of the jubilee celebrations youngsters also took part in a crown competition, to design and wear their own regal headdresses.
Winners of the crown competition were presented with boxes of fudge and runners up received a Barnard Castle bookmark.
