School puts emotional wellbeing to the fore

TOP MARKS: Montalbo School staff and pupils delighted with wellbeing award

A TEESDALE primary school has been presented with a national award in recognition of its work in supporting pupils, staff and parents.
Montalbo School, in Barnard Castle, was presented with Wellbeing Award for Schools certificate from the National Children’s Bureau, highlighting its “passion and support” for ensuring the emotional welfare of the children, staff and wider community.
Headteacher Chris Minikin said: “It was when the children came back to school – we recognised there was a need to look after their wellbeing as well as staff members, parents and the community.”
The school enrolled into the scheme and have introduced a number of activities including weekly assemblies, outdoor learning, mindfulness and cookery.
Some staff were trained to support “wellbeing champions” for each class to help their friends.
Last month the school was given a glowing report, which said: “The strengths were numerous and hard to quantify.
“Probably the most important was the passion and support for emotional wellbeing and mental health often referenced by children, parents, staff and the governors.
“This is probably the genesis of a very healthy culture of mutual respect and appreciation.”
He added: “The focus of trying to get the award helped identify how we can support the community.
“We recognise the importance of mental and physical health for the whole community.
“We will continue to look at ways to support wellbeing in the future.”
