Toilet roll fun leaves pupils flushed with success

NEW VENTURE: Organiser Ian Blake

CHILDREN at Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary School have celebrated their new toilet facilities by paying for a latrine for an impoverished Ivory Coast community.

The school became the 57th to sign up to the Barnard Castle Toilet Twinning scheme which provides hygienic facilities in poor rural areas across the world.

The school had new boys’ and girls’ loos installed earlier this year and on Red Nose Day. they held various activities to raise cash to join the toilet twinning project.

Ian Blake, who organises the Barnard Castle effort, visited a school assembly on Friday, May 6, to present the school with a certificate for its efforts.

He said: “It is brilliant and it is great that the school and Comic Relief have decided to do a twinning. A lot of children don’t have a toilet in their school and they can become poorly and miss school.

Addressing the pupils, he added: “You have built a toilet in a country called Cote d’Ivoire – we translate it as Ivory Coast, in Africa.

“It will give them dignity, privacy and help them not to become ill.

“People’s lives have been changed because of what you have done.”

Teacher Jane MacInnes said: “On Red Nose day we had quite a few activities.

“We had to see how many toilet rolls could be thrown into a loo, we built toilet roll towers, we guessed how many tissue sheets are on a toilet roll and some class did a quiz on toilets.
