Take two: Teesdale and Beyond Part II is a display of watercolour and oil landscapes by Matt Scott at The Witham in Barnard Castle until May 17

A MATHEMATICIAN’S vibrant watercolour and oil landscapes have gone on display at Barney’s art
centre.
It is the second time that Matt Scott has exhibited in The Witham and the current display is a continuation of his Teesdale and Beyond that was well received in September last year.
The latest collection covers many well-known and lesser-known scenes in Teesdale, the North East coastline and North Yorkshire.
The 33-year-old who studied mathematics at Warwick University, for no other reason than he did not know what he wanted to do after school, but was good at maths, is a self-taught artist who turned professional about six years ago.
His works are vibrant with a vivid use of colour.
He said: “It makes me happy, although I do some more moody pictures in greyscale.”
An example is a stunning oil painting of the meeting of the waters near Greta Bridge where a bright blue sky dapples through lush green vegetation to reflect upon the running water.
The artist describes his work as realism but with slight impressionism.
He added: “The older I get the more impressionistic it is becoming.”
Mr Scott takes inspiration from his passion for walking with his Beagle Charlie along the banks of the River Tees.
Teesdale and Beyond Part II continues until May 17.
