NEW sessions to get youngsters in Evenwood playing football are being launched next month. Officials at Evenwood Town FC have joined forces with the Randolph Community Centre to offer indoor training for boys and girls aged four to six every Monday evening from February 10.
Gareth McMahon, from the football club, said the hour-long sessions in the community cen[1]tre’s hall would be led by FA qualified coach Craig Thorn.
“It is the first time we have done anything like this,” said Gareth.
“The idea of the indoor winter training is to try to get as many involved as possible with a view to setting up junior teams at Evenwood Town FC.”
The club, which plays in the Darlington Sunday Morning Invitation League, is based at the Randolph Social Welfare Ground, which is also home to Bishop Auckland Ladies on a Sunday afternoon.
Gareth added: “We also have funding available for parents who would be interested in training as coaches for older age groups.
“It is our ambition to establish junior teams at the club within the village.”
Fliers will be sent to the village’s two primary schools and parents in enrolling their children can also do so at the Randolph Community Centre.
The welfare ground is also home to the Evenwood Cricket Club which operates a thriving junior section.
Gareth said future plans at the ground included improvements to the pavilion, which is shared by all users.
