Children at Cockfield Primary School are learning new engineering skills by building their own racing car.
Year 5 pupils have teamed up with engine manufacturing company Cummins, in Darlington, to build a Goblin class kit car which they will race at Croft next year as part of a Greenpower Education Trust scheme.
Headteacher Nicky Wright said the school was able to buy the kit car and a specialist toolbox to build it after a public appeal.
Cash was raised by Woodland’s Edge Hotel, the Farmer Christmas scheme, Leon’s Exotics and Inotec Solutions.
Edge Hotel landlady Fiona Coastworth became involved after seeing the appeal on Facebook.
She said: “It is close to my heart because my dad, Eric Watson, worked at Cummins and he loved Croft.”
Cummins engineer Amit Kumar visited the school on Friday when he explained how the car should be built and then helped as the children excitedly opened the boxes and started putting it together.
Ms Wright said once the frame is built the children would cover it in a sustainable manner.
She said: “All the children will get a chance to drive it and we will be taking it to a race event at Croft in June next year.”
About 20 schools are taking part in the Greenpower challenge.
The headteacher added that more fundraising will be needed to buy overalls, helmets and gloves for the drivers, and to transport the car to the track.
