Volunteers needed to help knit blankets for the vulnerable

Nessie Logan who launched Yarn and Yap

MEETINGS are back on for a Barnard Castle group who enjoy knitting and crocheting to help keep homeless people warm.
The Yarn and Yap group has returned to Andalusia Deli and Coffee Shop, in Galgate, between 10am and noon every Wednesday – and new members are wanted
The group started in 2019 but Covid-19 made life difficult. Nessie Logan, Blankets for the Homeless County Durham and Yarn and Yap Group organiser, said: “We continued as best we could to make blankets, when possible, throughout lockdown.
“We managed to supply a community in Weardale with a considerable amount of blankets for people who were struggling to maintain heating.”
She thanked Wendy Rain, of Barnard Castle, and Diane Burrell, from Weardale, who made transport and distribution possible. Also thanked were Weardale Foodbank for helping.
However, Ms Logan said: “We are still in need of blankets and squares. We also need more people to turn the squares into blankets. But we welcome all at Yarn and Yap regardless – they don’t have to support our project.”
Christine Taylour, who runs Andalusia, is still willing to be a drop-off point for squares and blankets. People can contact Nessie Logan on 07730 477772 for more details.
“We would like to thank Christine who allows us to invade her premisses every Wednesday and supports us ,” said Ms Logan.
“Thanks go to all who have supported our project. We try to support people in Teesdale where needed and all blankets are distributed through County Durham.”
