David sets stage for a romp with Georgians

STAGE SHOW: With theatres reopening

ANTIQUES expert David Harper is taking to the stage in Barnard Castle with a new show based on the stories contained in his book A Romp With The Georgians.

Mr Harper published the lighthearted look at life between 1714 and 1830 during last year’s lockdown after the tour of his one-man show came to a halt.

He said it had been a frustrating time, but he was looking forward to taking to the stage again.

“The show includes funny and unusual stories, all factually correct, of things most people don’t know and would not believe about Georgian life,” he said.

“If you understand the Georgians, you get a much better understanding of life now, both personally and politically.”

Mr Harper said that as with his previous tour, the show is partly unscripted with audience participation encouraged. “There are so many stories to tell in the book, I don’t know where I am going to go with it. The show is not a serious history lesson – it doesn’t matter whether you have an understanding of the history or not,” he said.

“The Georgian DNA is in all of us – they were a remarkable people. It’s my favourite period of history. I have always loved the Georgians.”

Mr Harper said he could not wait to be on stage again.

“I do enjoy the tours I do. I don’t think anyone would say it’s not a nerve racking thing. Every show is different.”

The show take place on Friday, September 3, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10.

Mr Harper has remained busy since the pandemic struck despite his TV and touring work being put on hold.

In addition to writing his new stage show, he has launched a Youtube channel and has now begun filming for a new series of the BBC show Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.

To book tickets for the show go to www.thewitham.org.uk or call the box office on 01833 631107 during centre open hours.
