SEVEN months since the last comedy show in Barnard Castle, the star of Live At The Apollo and Mock The Week, Gary Delaney, took to the stage at The Witham.
He performed two work-in-progress shows, for his forthcoming tour Gary In Punderland in front of sell-out audiences.
Promoter Peter Dixon, of Funny Way To Be comedy said: “It was a lovely way to restart our comedy programme at The Witham with our first show of the year and it was the first time Gary had taken to the stage with this material.
“For the last three years, Gary has sold out the 250 seats at The Witham so in some respects you might expect him to sell out the 60 available socially distanced seats for each of the two shows, but in these times we never took that for granted.
“It was great to see some regular faces and lots of new people who travelled from all over the north to see Gary.”
Mr Dixon added: “We worked very closely with The Witham team and everything on the night went very well, with the audience members following all the social distancing rules.
“The atmosphere soon relaxed and everyone had a great time with some lovely comments about the show.”
The comic quickly made an obligatory joke about Dominic Cummings, predicting every comedian for the next ten years will probably want to say something about his visit to Barney.
Gary Delaney’s shows were the first in a busy season of comedy lined up by Future Funny Way To Be Comedy over the summer.
They include Daniel Sloss, July 3; Work In Progress Day One, July 17, with Brennan Reece, Alfie Moore, Jo Caulfield and Carl Hutchinson; Work in Progress Day Two, July 31, with Lauren Pattison, Lloyd Griffith, Kieran Hodgson and Stephen Bailey.
A Jason Manford show on August 19 is already a sell-out, while Pete Firman is due in town on August 28. Gary Delaney returns with his full tour show on November 27.
