School’s community tree wins top prize

WINNERS: School staff and pupils jumping for joy after winning a Christmas Tree trail with their handcrafted decorations. They are pictured with Teesdale Lions' very own Santa Claus

A TEESDALE primary school that created handcrafted decorations for its community tree has won a top prize.

Staff and pupils of St Mary’s RC Primary School, in Barnard Castle, were jumping for joy when they were awarded first place in the Teesdale Lions festive competition to brighten up the town.

Children and their family, as well as staff members, carefully created their own decorations for their tree, which they had on show in the school grounds. Teesdale Lions president Sharon Walker said: “We’ve been really delighted with the number of people that got involved and it has been amazing. The trail has been really successful and we’re really grateful to all the businesses and individuals that have donated prizes for this.” The school was awarded a £20 voucher for Connelly’s Toy Shop along with a pint-sized wooden Santa Claus which was handcrafted and donated by Cotherstone residents David and Lilian Smith. There were ties in second place and judges awarded prizes to both collaborative effort on Farmer’s Way and to Mr and Mrs Goldberg. Third place was also tied with prizes given out to the Dunhill family and the Wilsmore family. As well as prizes for winners children who participated were also presented with sweets.
