CAMPAIGNERS are celebrating after plans to convert an historic pub into a home were withdrawn.
The owner of Holwick’s Strathmore Arms, Ivan Carter-Becker, had applied for permission to convert the inn, saying it was unviable as a business.
His agents, GAC Planning, had told county officers that the pub had been put up for sale in February, and the asking price reduced in July, but no reasonable bids had been made. The application was withdrawn last week as campaigners began to rally round to protect it.
Pub supporter Stephen Lickrish said more than 100 people were preparing to object to the proposal.
He added: “Joe Butterfield and William Robinson did a lot of marshalling of people. We were primed to release the objections in a torrent.
“Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) said they would support the objections.
“I suppose it doesn’t mean it will reopen but once Covid is consigned to history then it might be more attractive to a purchaser who will run it as a pub.
“In a place like Holwick people can become isolated and they need a pub where they can mix and chat.”
