TRADE has slumped at Barnard Castle’s Wednesday market, despite a large number of stalls attending during the latest Covid-19 lockdown.
Following on from a bumper day’s turnover on November 4, just hours before the lockdown came into force, traders now fear that shoppers incorrectly believe that the market has shutdown.
Suzan Vaughan, who runs a plant stall on the market, said: “It was like Christmas eve last week. It has been much quieter this week, but the weather has been kind to us.”
Despite some early morning trade, she described the afternoon as “dead” .
She added: “We are hoping some people will come down and see we are still here.”
While some traders are not allowed to attend the market, a large number including those dealing in fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, household products and plants continue to attend the market.
