Review of Cinderella - Civic Theatre, Darlington

CINDERELLA is one of the most popular pantomimes this year and the production by QDOS at Darlington Civic must rate as one the best around. It certainly is one of the best I have seen at Darlington.

The story is so familiar it needs no introduction, though if you do not follow certain TV programmes you may fail to recognise the stars of the show. As Baron Hardup we have Brendan Sheerin from Coach Trip, the numerous coach references may be lost if you don’t follow the show, but the jokes certainly entertained the older members of the audience. Nicki Evans graces the stage as The Good Fairy, known to many X Factor fans. Ashleigh and Pudsey, winners of Britain’s Got Talent in 2012, show their many skills and are delightful to watch. Ashleigh as Cinderella brings a little naivety to the role, which works well. The Ugly Sisters, Mel and Sue, played by Phil Corbitt and Danny Potts are probably the ugliest sisters I have seen, but are amazing. The whole show is held together my Buttons played brilliantly by Matt Edwards. He is outstanding throughout and certainly has the whole audience on his side instantly.

The set is as you would expect with QDOS has superb backcloths, bringing a bright and colourful experience to the theatre, costumes are excellent as ever and a magical coach and horse bring the first act to conclusion.

I will definitely be back before the end of the run.

Cinderella can be seen at Darlington Civic Theatre until Sunday 10th January 2016
